This index is compiled from the surviving letters and pro forma applications found in the Governors Office records, Colonial Office official correspondence, and convict records all held on film at the Archives Office of Tasmania.  Most records relate to Tasmanian convicts.  Often the spouse, children and other family members are identified, as well as their place of residence at the time of application, all valuable clues in establishing a link with other British records.
