Saturday 15 April - 2:00pm Annual General Meeting

VENUE: St Marks Church Hall, Scott Street, Bellerive

GUEST SPEAKER: Alison Alexander

TOPIC: Calcutta 220 years Anniversary: Thomas and Ann Peters and their descendants

Thomas Peters was one of a group in York, England who stole ten silver cups. Sentenced to death, commuted to transportation, he was one of the Calcutta convicts who founded Hobart in 1804. Thomas's wife Ann and baby daughter came too. They built a new life in Hobart - until tragedy struck.

Alison was born and educated in Hobart and went on to complete a PhD at the University of Tasmania. She is a Life Member of the Tasmanian Historical Research Association and was awarded the Clive Lord Memorial Medal by the Royal Society of Tasmania for her research in Tasmanian History. Most recently Alison was inducted to the Tasmanian Honour Roll of Women. She has written or edited more than 30 books covering a broad range of Tasmanian history.

Alison is well known to our membership and is Patron of the Tasmanian Family History Society Inc. and it is such a pleasure to have Alison as guest speaker.

RENEW TODAY

Memberships are currently due for the year commencing 1 April 2023.

The renewal form was posted with the latest Tasmanian Ancestry Journal early March.

If you have not yet paid your subscription and have misplaced the renewal form, please let us know at membership@tasfhs.org and we will arrange a replacement.

Payment methods are endorsed on the renewal form. The preferred method of payment is direct transfer to the TFHS Inc. account.

It is very important that your 8-digit CRN is used as the reference. In the past a number of deposits have been made that can't be identified due to lack of CRN details. The CRN is clearly marked on the front, bottom right-hand side of the renewal form.

If using Debit/Credit card, please ensure that your card is current, the card number is entered clearly and in full and that the expiry date (mm/yy) is entered as well.

Cheques are still acceptable and should be sent to Membership TFHS INC PO Box 326 ROSNY PARK TAS 7018

We look forward to your continued membership and hope you enjoy the articles in Tasmanian Ancestry.

Maree's Mutterings

Female Convict Research Centre currently has a volunteer matching Irish convicts to their previous offences in Ireland using Irish prison records. From some of those the place of birth, sometimes right down to the street can be found. On arrival here, many just had a county recorded as native place. Now these women can be more accurately placed. In some cases, previous offences that were not mentioned on arrival have been found.

The new information can be found in Female Convict Research Centre database on the pre-transportation page.

Trove Saved

TROVE Saved! What fabulous news on a Monday 3rd April 2023 morning!

The National Library of Australia's beloved online portal Trove has been saved from the threat of imminent closure after a cash injection of $33 million from the Albanese government.

The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age revealed last year the archive's funding was due to expire at the end of June, meaning the portal was at risk of being shut down.

Trove is the single point of entry to the collections of hundreds of Australian libraries, universities, museums, galleries, and archives. The community platform attracts 22 million visits each year and includes the definitive collection of digitised Australian newspapers.

In an announcement to be made on Monday, Arts Minister Tony Burke and Finance Minister Katy Gallagher will "end the funding uncertainty once and for all" and secure Trove for future generations.

The government will provide the library with $33 million over four years in the May federal budget, as well as $92 million in indexed ongoing annual funding.

Thank you to everyone who wrote/spoke/shared and advocated for Trove. It was fantastic to hear the range of voices speaking of the importance of this resource hosted by the National Library of Australia and supported by libraries and others across the country.

The Government has heard your calls, with ongoing funding announced. Thank you! People power at work.

Our next event, our annual Seminar, is only one month away on Sunday 7 May. The topic is Transported for life - a lottery? The seminar will focus on those convicts considered some of the worst to arrive in Van Diemen's Land: the 780 women who were convicted to transportation for life. Presentations will examine the sentencing process, the origins of the 'lifers,' their convict experience, and the lives that they built post-sentence. If you cannot attend in person, we are offering a Zoom Webinar option. Please check out our website for the seminar program and booking information.

We are delighted to announce that we have launched our Facebook Page - please 'Like' us, and encourage any relevant groups you belong to, to do the same.
