Tuesday 16 May - 7:30pm General Meeting

VENUE:Old Sunday School, St Johns Park Precinct

GUEST SPEAKER:Lucy Frost

TOPIC:Unpaid and unfree: Children apprenticed from the Queen's Orphan Schools

Of the 6,000 children who went through the Queen's Orphan Schools between 1828 and 1879, many were retrieved by their convict mothers or another relative - but not all. For thousands of 'orphans' (whether 'orphaned' by death or by the convict system), there was no such reprieve. They remained institutionalised until they were 12-14, and were then 'apprenticed'. Instead of an apprenticeship in the traditional sense of being bound to a master to learn a trade, these children were sent out as unpaid labour under much the same conditions as the assigned convicts before them. "White slaves", they were sometimes called in letters to newspapers deploring their conditions.

Their circumstances are the subject of this talk.

Lucy Frost began researching the experiences of convict women and their children soon after taking up her appointment to the Chair of English at the University of Tasmania in 1997. During her decade as a director of the Female Factory Historic Site, Ltd (2001-2012), she and fellow Board member, Alison Alexander, organised the research group that grew into the Female Convicts Research Centre, of which she became the Founding President. While writing Abandoned Women (2012), her study of convict women tried in Scotland, she became increasingly interested in children confined to the Queen's Orphan Schools - the subject of her most recent book, Convict Orphans (2023).
